Well it wasn't ajax that fired van Basten.
Van Basten thought he wasn't good enough anymore. He hasn't reached his goals and thinks he wouldn't next season so he quits.
He says that all the blame is on him and not at the team.
The biggest mistake he made was surrouding himself, like he did when he took on the Holland job, with friends that lacked the experiece as much as he did.
The fame that 'San Marco' gathered through his active career gave him exeptance from the Ajax crowd. However, at a top fight team you've got to get results and if you don't fans are going to turn against you, exept if you're Maradona being the Argentina manager.
Then there's the fact that he reacted very harsh in press conferences against his own players which, according to the press, led to friction between the head coach and the squad.

Well yeah exactly. Then again...he started his managing carreer as coach of the Dutch national team, I think that is just a stupid carreer move. You don't start as a great player in a great team too...
He should have started as coach of a small team.

I agree, he booed experienced players as Davids, Seedorf, Van Bommel and Van Nistelrooy out of the Dutch national team. When you look at those players, you notice a pattern. Van Basten isn't too fond of players/people who have got personality and aren't afraid you be outspoken.

The media in Italy are linking him to AC Milan but Van Basten said that he wasn't ready for such a position due to his injured ankle. His ankle's been a problem for a long time and recently it got worse, he'll probably undergo surgery again.
