South Africa World Cup chiefs have said so many seats were empty because overseas fans, VIP supporters and sponsors returned almost half the total available to them.

FIFA refused to disclose the figure of 1.2million unsold tickets before and during the tournament, with some games having up to 13,000 empty seats.

But official data shows MATCH Hospitality, which is run at Manchester-based ticketing company Byrom and had the exclusive contract for 380,000 VIP tickets, returned 240,000.

The 31 visiting countries, whose tickets have been snapped up in previous World Cups, sold just 176,000 tickets, 31 per cent of the 570,000 allocated, while tour operators reported abysmal sales of just 145,000 of the 344,000 tickets allocated.
Tournament sponsors, who included McDonald's, adidas and Budweiser, bought only 190,000 tickets and returned 360,000.

The 1.2m seats unsold from the 2.9m available were put on sale at South African ticket centres amid chaotic scenes.

But most South Africans could not afford the minimum £50 price, never mind £1,000-plus hospitality seats.

The result was almost a quarter of a million empty seats, despite organisers' frequent claims that games had sold out.

FIFA have pledged to rip up their ticket structure for Brazil 2014, but MATCH Hospitality vowed to make a bumper profit from the 2014 tournament to make amends for losses in South Africa.
