Seattle Sounders FC midfielder Marco Pappa was arrested Sunday morning under suspicion of driving under the influence and speeding following the team’s 1-0 defeat at the hand of the Colorado Rapids.
Sounders respond
Here’s the official press release from the Sounders:
“Seattle Sounders FC midfielder Marco Pappa was arrested on the morning of Sunday, July 19 for driving under the influence and speeding. Pappa will undergo an assessment by Major League Soccer's Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health ("SABH") Program doctors pursuant to the SABH Policy. The Sounders FC midfielder is not eligible to participate in any competition until that assessment is complete, he is cleared for participation by the SABH Program doctors and Major League Soccer completes its investigation.
"We are gathering information on this matter and have been in contact with the league office, the MLS Players Union, local law enforcement and Marco directly," said Sounders FC General Manager and President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. "We will continue to work in cooperation with all involved parties and will have no further comment until more information is available."
It was a surprise to Sounder fans as Pappa is one of the friendliest players on the team, and is always one to stay around for autographs following matches no matter the results.
Pappa just returned to Seattle from playing with the Guatemalan national team who were routed in CONCACAF Gold Cup competition and eliminated after the group stage. While Guatemala may have been eliminated early, they walked away with a major victory in a draw against Mexico in their second game of the tournament.
The Sounders will likely travel to Montreal without the midfielder as Canada has a stern policy on no entry for people who have a driving under the influence charge.
How will Seattle be affected?
This comes as another blow to Seattle, who are still without Clint Dempsey and Brad Evans. Those two are still both away on United States Men's National Team duty at the Gold Cup; Additionally, Seattle is without Obafemi Martins, who is still out with an injury suffered in US Open Cup action last month.
Pappa’s offense will be missed as he has two of Seattle’s eleven goals that haven’t come from Dempsey or Martins this season. Along with his two goals, Pappa has five assists in his 15 appearances in 2015. Since Dempsey, Evans and Pappa were all called in for national team duty for the Gold Cup, Seattle has scored just one goal in three matches.
The team did manage to start without Pappa on Saturday but it was expected that this upcoming match would be the one where he made his comeback to the starting eleven. Now, it is likely we will see Christian Roldan or Thomás as his replacement Saturday night.
What is the precedent?
Earlier this season, Philadelphia Union forward CJ Sapong was arrested for a similar charge and missed three matches while he participated in the league’s SABH program.
The league rehab facility is located in Malibu, California, where Pappa would still have access to keep up on his team while completing the league's SABH program.
